Live Event on How Air Pollution increases susceptibility to various Respiratory disorders?
21 out of 30 top polluted cities in World are from India. According to WHO, air pollution is the greatest environmental risk to health, with 9 out of 10 people breathing in polluted air every day.
Air pollution is a complex mixture of various gases, particulates, hydrocarbons, and transition metals. The health risk from particulate pollution is high for some susceptible groups such as the children and the elderly persons, and those with diseases of the heart and lungs. One reason why children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of air pollution is that they breathe more rapidly than adults and so absorb more pollutants. In allergic rhinitis (AR), air pollution is one of the risk factors that induces allergic sensitization and deteriorates the AR condition and may lead to Perennial Allergic Rhinitis.
When we breathe in dirty air, we bring air pollutants deep into our lungs, so it’s no surprise that air pollution causes serious damage to the respiratory tract. Air pollution exposure can trigger new cases of asthma, exacerbate (worsen) a previously existing respiratory illness, and provoke development or progression of chronic illnesses including lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and emphysema. Air pollutants also negatively and significantly harm lung development, creating an additional risk factor for developing lung diseases later in life.
